Facebook is a social networking website, launched in February 2004, which is operated and privately owned by Facebook.Inc, with more than 500 million active users in July 2010, which is about one person for every fourteen in the world. Users can add people as friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. Additionally, users can join networks organized by workplace, school, or college. Facebook allows anyone who declares themselves to be aged 13 or older to become a member of the website. I myself have more than 1500 friends on Facebook. I have been using Facebook since the past 4years. I have a few teachers as well as the Principal of Vidyalankar and also have a lot of senior students in my Facebook friend list. You don’t have time to meet all your friends especially when you are doing engineering, Facebook allows you to chat, message, share links & photos with your friends.
Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerburg with his college roommates and fellow computer science students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The website's membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It gradually added support for students at various other universities before opening to high school students, and, finally, to anyone aged 13 and over.
Facebook has met with some controversy. It has been blocked intermittently in several countries including Pakistan, Syria, the The People’s Republic of China, Vietnam, Iran and North Korea. It has also been banned at many places of work to discourage employees from wasting time using the service. Everyone will agree with me when I say that Facebook causes addiction.
It has now launched so many games like Mafia Wars, Poker, Crazy Cabbie, Farm Ville and many more attractive games that the users keep on playing for hours.
One of the most popular applications on Facebook is the Photo application, where users can upload albums and photos. Facebook allows users to upload an unlimited number of photos, compared with other image hosting services such as Photobucket and Flickr, which apply limits to the number of photos that a user is allowed to upload. During the first years, Facebook users were limited to 60 photos per album. As of May 2009, this limit has been increased to 200 photos per album. User can tag his friends in his photos, can share links on various pages and groups.
Facebook has now become so famous that many multinational companies have started advertising on Facebook.
You will find almost everyone on Facebook; its far more user friendly than Orkut. A user has the liberty of making Fan pages & Community groups.
I own and run 4 groups and 15 pages on Facebook, one of them is called “Scrap Exams Save Paper, What an idea Sirji”, which has more than 9000 members.
Facebook's privacy has also been an issue, and the safety of their users has been compromised several times. Facebook settled a lawsuit regarding claims over source code and intellectual property. The site has also been involved in controversy over the sale of fans and friends.
Anything in this world has two sides, the good and the bad. We have already discussed about the plus points and utilities that Facebook provides to its Users above but, the bad point is that the User easily gets addicted to it.
Students keep on chatting or playing games and neglect studies. Employees keep on chatting on Facebook while they are working in offices. There have also been a few cases of kidnapping.
On the whole, it’s on how we use Facebook, whether we use it for doing constructive things or we use it just for time pass.
"How on earth would we stalk our exes, remember our friend’s birthdays, bug our friends, and play rousing games without Facebook?"
